This book by Matt Mullenix is one of my FAVORITES! It paints kestrels in a different light and may change your opinion of them. One thing that stuck in my mind was one of Matt's passed birds named Phoebe who had taken 671 various birds in the two years he had her! He then released her.
He gives great tips on how to get them actually going on game. I know the popular opinion is that a falconer will get a kestrel, play with it for a couple weeks, release it and then get a red tail. But the way he describes it, and the tips he gives, I bet you could really get a good game hawk from a K-bird. In fact, I ALMOST trapped one over the red tail this year. ;D
If you haven't read it, you definetely should!
