The two terms I am referring to are 'Cast', and 'Hood'. The term 'cast' simply carries to many pertinent meanings. In order to prevent confusion what other words, or names could we call things that are currently called by the name 'cast'? 'Hood' is only problematic in that we call a 'giant hood' a 'hood' and it seems to lack any qualification for being such. Does anyone think that there is a better prescription for this problem than is currently the case? If so please post your thoughts. I believe that 'giant hood' seems to be misleading entirely.

I dont think it is misleading. A properly built "giant hood" should be light tight. Meaning the bird cannot see anything while in the "giant hood". Now a properly made and fit hood does the same thing. So it is in fact, a giant "hood". They are also know as transport boxes.

I think the terms are appropriate as they are, Even though there are 4 meanings for cast, falconers know what is being said by the context of the conversation. 1. I'm flying a cast of harris hawks. 2. I cast my bird from the fist when hunting instead of letting it dive from a high perch. 3. I had to cast my bird to imp a feather. 4. Look at the size of this cast I found next to the perch this morning. Same word in all examples but we know exactly what is being said. As for the giant hood, same thing. When falconers are talking about the hood, if they are using a giant hood, they specifically say "I use a giant hood". These terms have been around for thousands of years and make us unique as falconers. Many people are now shying away from some of them though. Many falconers will tell you "I got a new male gyr". Instead of saying "tiercel" or "gyrkin".

'Giant hood' does have the same function as a hood does, but is different, and can be used for different things as is implied by the name transport box. Certainly it is different for the bird too. 'Cast' is just ubiquitous to falconry, and to some degree it is impossible as Eddie suggests to confuse it's meaning because the context(s) are so different. Nonetheless it compared to other falconry terms is used more.

Yeah. Some falconry terms are really used a lot while most are not used much, if at all. For the seasoned falconers, when was the last time you said or heard another falconer talk about their bird funking on the bank???

I haven't ever heard 'funking' on a bath. Anyone know the french word for a falcon, typically a peregrine's turn into their trademark stoop? 'Giant hood' just sounds stupid. It's like there was nothing more noble to say. It sounds unattractive at least.
